The feeling at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?
Had their campaign unraveling, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, only for him publicly stated that the club had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or self-destructing.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback
At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this season. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were attempting to stay there for another season. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. They were unable to weaken their team lacking backup options.
He joined initially under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Discovering His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was still trying to determine the nature of his skill set. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
