Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to question certain calls made by the official, echoing the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
